Unfortunately the “honeymoon phase” of a relationship only lasts so long. This phase is when everything in the relationship still feels shiny and exciting and brand new. Over time, however, it is natural for this excitement to fade; you might start feeling as if you are in a rut with your partner.
This is only normal, but even so most people crave the newness experienced during the first few months of any relationship. Fortunately for you and your partner there are a few things you can do in order to spice things up in your relationship. Here are 5 ways to keep the excitement alive, even in a long-term relationship.
Plan a weekend getaway
If you already have kids in the mix, it can be hard to go on a date let alone spend a weekend away together. No matter how difficult it is, do your best to take at least one trip away together each year. Ask the grandparents to help out, chances are they’ll love spending some one-on-one time and spoiling their grandchildren.
Start going to the gym together
A couple that works out together, stays together. Research even says so; Psychology Today says that “after jointly participating in an exciting physical challenge or activity, couples report feeling more satisfied with their relationships and more in love with their partner…”
When you invest in a gym membership together, not only will you improve your overall well-being but you might just light a spark in your romantic and sex life. Give it a try, worse comes to worst you drop a few pounds or build some muscle from your new workout routine.
Pretend to be meeting each other for the first time
Maybe this will feel too weird for you and your partner, but try something new on your next date. Act as if you are meeting each other for the first time. Ask your partner things like “how would you describe yourself?” Chat about hobbies, interests, work life, home life… you might just learn something new about each other!
Take up a new hobby as a couple
Engaging in a new activity together is a wonderful way to keep things exciting. Pick something that neither one of you has tried before such as pottery making, yoga, salsa dancing, or pasta making classes. It doesn’t matter what you do, just do it together. Learning to love a new hobby will be so much more fulfilling when you do it alongside the person you love.
Show some PDA every now and again
Maybe you have always scoffed at the sight of a young couple showing extreme public displays of affection. But what is so wrong with showing your love and attraction to someone in public? Of course there is a certain line you shouldn’t cross, but feel free to hug, kiss, and hold hands together in public. Not only does it reinforce your love for each other to the people around you, but also to you and your partner.
